Kluender- Art 7/8 B2

Art 7/8 B2 block took a break from their self-portraits to begin glazing their ceramic pieces.

I fired the kiln to about 1800 degrees to chemically change the clay to a ceramic piece. This stage of clay is called BISQUEWARE. Then, we were ready to add color!

First, we added a black underglaze wash to the piece and used a sponge to remove the excess glaze from the surface, leaving the black in the cracks. This really brought out all of our texture and accentuated those lines.

Next block, we will begin to layer colored underglazes on top. We will finish it off with a coat of clear glaze to make it shine.

Don't worry if you have a broken piece....some pieces can be fused back on with glaze....and others can be glued on after the firing is complete.

Some students included hangers, while others opted to use plate hangers to display their pieces.

Kluender/ Art 78

Art 78 students have begun working on a CERAMIC  project. We used our celebrity photos to etch into a clay SLAB.

Then, students are adding additional 3D elements in clay.

After being BISQUE FIRED, we will add color using glazing techniques.

Kluender/ Art 78

I'm so excited to take back my Art 78 students! We have had two great projects with our student teacher, Mrs. Didlake, but I'm ready to get to work with my classes again :)

I'm getting all set up for our next project....CLAY! Students will be creating a slab tile and applying the image of the celebrity that inspired them using a SGRAFFITO (scratching) technique.

After our tiles are bisque fired, we will apply black underglaze to "age" the tile, colored underglazes to add color, and clear glaze to add a shiny finish!

Can't wait to see the final product. I'll try to remember to keep the blog up-to-date with studio pics, even if it is hard to snap photos with clay covered hands ;)

Stay tuned....
