Kluender: Art 78

Students are working hard to mix and blend colored pencils to make the most realistic colors. These animal images will be in color,  but will also have a "filter box" applied to it where pencil shading will be applied...stay tuned for pictures!

Computer Art students are beginning to add color to their Power Word Kaleidoscopes! Wow, these are looking great! We discussed adding shading to create a push/pull feeling of movement in the design. Some students even chose to add patterns into areas of the background for extra detail!

Kluender: Art 8

Art 8 is shading, shading, shading! It's SO EXCITING to see these hand drawings coming to completion!

These 8th graders have worked past artist's block, self doubt, and drawing difficulty to produce some really great drawings!

Stay tuned for images of some AMAZING RESULTS!!!!!!!

CA 78 Students are making progress on their studio power word kaleidoscopes! After  finishing the kaleidoscope designs in pencil, they are fixing any mistakes and tracing with sharpie.

Then, we're discussing color choices. Students should think about their color choices and how they will affect their end result. They are required to include shading some areas of the colored pencil and can add patterning if they wish.

Kluender: Art 78 Grid Enlargement

Art 78 students chose a photo to work from to create a drawing using the grid enlargement method. The original photo was 8x10" and we made a one inch grid to lay over the image.
Then, we traced a 16x20" frame and created a 2 inch grid over that. Students have gotten a good start on their drawings, but we will be taking a break from them soon to start another project.
These large grid drawings will live in their cubbies and they will work on them in intermittently throughout the semester.

Our Computer Art students are beginning to experiment with filters using Adobe Photoshop CS2. We have also learned to create a blank canvas, choose and resize a photo, and save to the shared drive.
Next, we will be using all of these skills to create a digital photo kaleidoscope!

Students are also still working on their studio project kaleidoscopes based on a Power Word!

Kluender: Art 8

Art 8 has two main goals this year- to improve their OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING skills and to include CONTENT in their artwork. This means that our 8th grade artists will be learning to "see with their eyes, not just their brains" and to think about "why" artists make artwork and to add meaning to their artwork. My goal is for them to learn how to make the viewer engage in a "conversation" with their artwork, to want to know more about the subject matter, not just focus on improving skills.

We started out the year by learning a bit about VALUE (shading) and how to create that using graphite pencils. We learned that a #2 pencil is an HB pencil, that B pencils have darker and softer lead, and H pencils have harder and lighter lead. We created a few value scales to practice our shading skills.

Then, we discussed Observational Drawing. I asked the class to draw an apple from memory, then I showed them an apple to draw. We discussed the differences in what your brain perceives and what your eye actually sees.

We had a short demo on how to draw hands. Students were asked to bring in a small hand-held personal item from home that represented something about themselves. We are currently drawing our hands holding the item. We will be finishing these in grayscale value using the drawing pencils.

Kluender: CA 78 Kaleidoscopes

Computer Art 78 (CA78) is working on creating a kaleidoscope design using a "power word". Students brainstormed a list of words that made an impact or meant something to them. After selecting a word, they chose different fonts to spell out the word on our first kaleidoscope triangle.

After the first one was done, it's all tracing using the lightboxes!

The examples below are from previous years when we used student's names, but you can see how beautifully the kaleidoscopes turn out!

I will post pictures of our class as they make progress on theri kaleidoscopes.

Kluender: Art 78 grid practice

My Art 78 students are starting off the year with a grid enlargement project. We began with a small sketchbook assignment worksheet to practice using a grid to recreate an image. They are off to a nice start!
